Why Cards Curl Even When They Sit in a Box

When your foils start to curl, handling is almost never the reason. Cards are cardboard, cardboard absorbs moisture and releases it again, and its size changes slightly as it does. Two things push it out of shape: a climate that stays too dry or too damp, and one that keeps jumping back and forth. The jumping usually goes unnoticed, and the first problem tends to get corrected in the wrong direction: the most obvious protective move is a bag of desiccant in the box, and it pulls foils into exactly the curl it was supposed to prevent.

Why foils are hit hardest

A card without foil is paper layers all the way through. When it absorbs moisture, it swells fairly evenly and barely warps. A foil card is built differently: a thin printed foil layer on the front, adhesive underneath, cardboard behind it. The cardboard responds to humidity, the foil barely does. When the air gets damp, the cardboard side expands and the front of the card turns concave, with the corners lifting toward you. When it gets dry, the cardboard shrinks and the front bulges out, with the corners bending backward.

That is actually useful, because the direction tells you which problem you have: corners toward you means too damp, corners bending backward means too dry. A curled foil is technically still a card, it just has ambitions of becoming a Pringle. The annoying part is that the card can be otherwise flawless, no scratches and clean edges, and still refuse to lie flat in its holder.

Desiccant is the wrong instinct

Store them dry, they say. But how dry, exactly?

Silica gel sits in every other shoebox, costs nothing, and so it tends to end up in the card box. Museums do work with it, but with preconditioned gel that has been set to a specific humidity level beforehand. The bags you find at home are fresh desiccant with no target value: they pull humidity down and do not stop. In a closed box, that creates a dry climate, the cardboard behind the foil shrinks, and the card curls.

Humidity packs, small humidity regulators made for trading cards, work differently: they have a target value built in, absorbing moisture when the surroundings are damper and releasing it when they are drier.

Your home in winter, the basement in summer

In your home, winter is the critical season. Cold air holds very little water to begin with, and once your heating brings it up to room temperature, it is very dry. Cooking and showering raise the level a little, but the air stays dry through the entire heating season, and dry air is what bends foils backward.

The basement has its problem in summer. Its walls stay cool even in July, and when warm summer air flows in, it cools against the walls and turns humid there, up to the point of condensation. Opening the basement window on a beautiful day makes the basement damper, not drier. In summer, air it out at night or on cool days instead.

That makes the basement storage compartment and an uninsulated attic the worst storage spots in the house, and they are exactly where collections end up once they take up too much space in the apartment.

The cold exterior wall is its own climate

Even within a heated room there are better and worse spots, and the difference comes down to wall temperature. In winter, an exterior wall is noticeably colder than the room. The air right in front of it is the same air as everywhere else in the room, but because it is colder, its relative humidity is much higher: a comfortable fifty percent at 20 °C becomes 83 percent against a surface at 12 °C. A cardboard box sitting on the floor against that wall sits in a different climate than the rest of the room.

Your collection therefore belongs on a shelf against an interior wall rather than on the floor, with a little clearance from the wall so air can circulate behind it. Direct sunlight also bleaches the printing inks, and the car is no good as temporary storage because it hits the extremes in summer and winter alike.

How much sleeves and boxes slow moisture exchange

A sleeve protects against abrasion, dust, and fingerprints, and it does that reliably. Against moisture it is a brake, not a barrier: water vapor finds its way past the opening, it just takes longer. A double-sleeved card takes even longer, but even that is not sealed off. It does not need to be, because the regulated air from the box later reaches the card through that same opening.

The box works on the same principle. A closed container does not even out fluctuations, but it slows them down far enough that the room's daily humidity swings barely reach the cards. It is also what makes a humidity pack work at all. On an open shelf, the small pack would have to regulate the entire room, and that is a losing battle.

If a card has already curled

Curled does not mean lost. As long as the curve comes from the moisture content of the cardboard and the card has no crease, adjusting that moisture content brings it back. The tools for the job are the humidity packs mentioned above: flat pouches filled with glycerin and water that you simply place in the box with your cards. The filling absorbs or releases moisture until the air in the container sits at the target value, which is 65 percent relative humidity for the trading card packs. In a closed container, the manufacturer says the 8-gram pack straightens up to five curled cards in 24 to 48 hours, the 33-gram pack up to ten in 48 to 72 hours. After that, it simply stays put and holds the level for about half a year, depending on how often the box is opened. An indicator card shows when it is time for a new one.

What does not do much, on the other hand, are the pressing tricks from the internet. A stack of books keeps the card flat as long as the books sit on top, but it does not change the cause, and the effect usually disappears once the weight comes off. And stay away from heat entirely. An iron or a hair dryer damages the foil and the adhesive underneath, and that cannot be undone afterward.

Frequently asked questions

What humidity level is right for cards?
A moderate level that moves as little as possible. Anything consistently above 70 percent gets critical, because mold becomes possible; anything consistently below 30 percent dries the cardboard out. A normally occupied, heated room usually sits in between; a damp basement and an uninsulated attic do not.

Is silica gel always bad?
For tools and electronics it is exactly right. Fresh desiccant in a card box is not, because it pulls humidity down with no target value. If you already have bags in the box, take them out and let the cards sit in a living space for a few days.

Does a toploader help against curling?
Only mechanically. A toploader is open at the top and regulates nothing; it merely holds the card in shape while it is inside. Take the card out, and the curl shows up again.

Do only foils curl?
Mostly. Cards without a foil layer are built more symmetrically and respond more evenly. Under sustained dryness or dampness they warp too, though. And the symmetrical build offers no protection against mold either.

If you do not know what your storage spot is doing: a hygrometer costs a few francs, and the best place for it is right where the cards are, not the middle of the room.
